This time of year it’s ever more important to be vigilant with online shopping. RapidStudio have a reputable name in the community and provide secure online shopping, but what about all the other stores you visit on the Internet?

Read on for three easy to understand tips on being web safe when you shop.How can you tell if a website is trustworthy?

  • Check for concrete contact details.
    • Check that the online store has a confirmed physical address and phone number. If it looks like they are hiding something, think twice.

  • Check for an security certificate.

      Address bar shows Google uses an SSL certificate to protect your privacy while browsing.
    • Reputable shops use SSL protection for online money transactions. SSL is an encryption method that keeps your personal and banking details private safe while using the site.

    • If the store hasn’t got SSL, make sure it uses an SSL protected payment provider, like Payfast. Otherwise, think twice. With no SSL encryption, your details are open for middlemen to steal your private information.

  • Green for Go. Lock and Load.

    • Criminals can lie and tell you they have SSL encryption, but your web browser will tell you the truth in the address bar. An SSL encrypted site will have a green coloured lock in the address bar on the web address. If the certificate has Extended Validation, it will also display the registered business name.
